Residents of AlNeirab Camp in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo have launched cries for help over the spread of lethal insects, rodents, and stink, inflicted by the contaminated water used by farmers to irrigate their land lots in the area.
The residents appealed to all concerned bodies, including UNRWA, to urgently step in and take action regarding the poor hygiene and diseases wrought on the camp.
The residents further warned of the spread of cutaneous leishmaniasis, caused by Leishmania tropica, also known as the “Aleppo Evil”, “Aleppo ulcer”, “Aleppo boil”, “Aleppo button” or “habbat halab”. It can produce permanent disfiguring scars on the face, especially of young people. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is mainly found in areas associated with poor waste disposal. Water shortage, poor sanitation and lack of other public services combine to create ripe conditions for transmission of the disease. It is a vector-borne disease transmitted by infected sandflies
