UNRWA’s spokesperson, Samy Meshaashaa, confirmed that the Agency had not been directly informed by the American Administration, of its decision to freeze its financial funding for UNRWA, and that even the media did not highlight the story.
Meshaashaa announced in a statement on Wednesday, that the biggest ten sponsors provide UNRWA with more than 80% of its income, and that they will relentlessly work with all their partners to cover the funding requirements of 2018.
He added that: “UNRWA’s input in the human development - significantly through its educational and medical care services - is described as something which can not be dispensed, for the dignity of the Palestinian refugee and the stability in the region.”
A few days ago, the United States had announced that it will take a decision to stop its funding for UNRWA’s programs, until the Palestinians agree to return to the negotiations table with the Israeli occupation.
