Director of UNRW’s Protection Division Matteo Benatti promised to release a statement upon return to his office in Amman to clarify UNRWA’s official position as regards the return of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon to Syria and the conditions to be faced by the returnees.
The promise was made during a meeting held a few days earlier between UNRWA’s Protection Division staff members and representatives of the Association of Palestinians Displaced from Syria to Lebanon to discuss the refugees’ reluctance to return to Syria and possible ways to cooperate with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in order to boost protection for the Palestinians.
The Association of Displaced Palestinians called on the Protection Division to release an official statement over the risks and hardships that are likely to be faced by Palestinians seeking to return to Syria.
The association also called for serious efforts to urge the UNHCR to fulfill promises made a couple of years ago to hold meetings with UNRWA and the association so as to work out the protection and re-settlement files.
