UNRWA in Syria to Suspend Contracts of 108 Staff Members

UNRWA handed over notices to end the contracts of 108 workers, out of 132 relief officers working in food-aid distribution.

The concerned staff members, who have been working for the agency for five years, were asked to sign the lay-off notices, which will enter into effect by the end of 2018 due to a projected cut of food aids.

UNRWA attributed the measure to the funding crunch wrought on the agency.

Meanwhile, Ali Huweidi, Director-General of Association 302 to Defend Refugees’ Rights, said UNRWA’s operations in Syria come as part of the agency’s Emergencies Program.

Huweidi denounced UNRWA’s decision to lay off Syria-based personnel at a time when Palestinian refugees in Syria continue to launch distress signals over the acute dearth in humanitarian aid and relief assistance.
