23 refugees, including 20 Palestinians, were arrested by the Thai police on Monday, following a raid on their residences and over allegations of overstaying their visas.
A police Major General told Thai news outlets that a meeting will be convened with UNHCR delegates on December 6 to discuss the situation of over 2,000 migrants who have disembarked in Thailand and to seek possible ways to send them to other destinations.
Activists quoted the migration police chief in Thailand as threatening, in statements circulated on Facebook, to detain all Palestinian refugees in Thailand, whom he called a “mafia”.
Human rights activist Fatma Jabeur slammed the UNHCR in Thailand for dragging its feet over the crackdowns perpetrated against the refugees around the clock.
Jabeur said the UNHCR staff demanded that the Thai police arrest all migrants who rallied outside of the UNHCR office a few days earlier and handed over their photos and addresses to the Thai policemen over allegations of involvement in acts of sabotage.
The activist urged the UNHCR to take serious measures in order to protect the refugees and work out their situation without further delay.
On December 1, a group of Palestinian and Arab refugees rallied outside of the UNHCR’s office in Bangkok, protesting the UN’s apathy regarding their tragic situation.
Some 600 stranded migrants, including 50 Palestinian families from Syria, have been at the risk of arbitrary detention and refoulement in the Thai territories.
