AlShaalan Warns Palestinians from Syria in Lebanon against Migrant Smuggling

Secretary of the Popular Palestinian Committees in Lebanon, Abu Iyad AlShaalan, notified Palestinian refugees from Syria who have been seeking shelter in the Lebanese territories about the risks and penalties they are likely to face by attempting to migrate via illegal routes.

News outlets quoted AlShaalan as stating that over recent months, reports have increasingly emerged on the attempts of Palestinians from Syria in Lebanon to reach Kurdistan via clandestine routes opened up by smugglers in Lebanon, Kurdistan, and Syria. As a next step, the refugees are taken to the Turkish borders.

AlShaalan added that according to the Iraqi law, those who are caught crossing borderlands through illegal channels are sentenced to three to 15 years in jail.

He expressed wishes that Palestinian refugees would not risk their lives attempting to reach tension-stricken zones along the Iraqi, Syrian, and Turkish borders.

Nearly 31,000 Palestinian refugees from Syria have sought shelter in Lebanon, where they have been subjected to a precarious legal status and dire socio-economic conditions owing to their lack of access to the local labor market and absence of relief assistance.
