Forestation Campaign Kick-Started in Handarat Camp

Basma Youth Foundation embarked on a forestation initiative in the alleyways of Handarat Camp for Palestinian refugees in Aleppo.

The initiative was launched in partnership with the director of the Institution of Palestinian Refugees in Aleppo and spokesman of Handarat Camp along with representatives of local NGOs and government institutions.

A volunteer said the campaign aims at boosting environment protection and garnishing civilian alleyways that have been filled with trash piles.

Heavy shelling on Handarat and bloody shootouts between the government forces and the opposition outfits resulted in huge material damage. The confrontations culminated in the government’s takeover of the camp along with other areas in Aleppo. A mass exodus from the camp occurred on April 27, 2013.

Those who have returned to Handarat Camp have been subjected to dire conditions due to the poor infrastructure, water and power crises, and the lack of much-needed services.
