Displaced Palestinians North of Syria Denied Right to ID Documents

Human rights activists north of Syria said civil registration offices have refused to issue identity cards to Palestinian refugees who were displaced from Yarmouk Camp and other areas in Damascus and Rif Dimashq.

The activists said displaced Palestinian refugees have been denied the right to personal identity documents on account that they cannot be treated as Syrian nationals.

The activists called for a serious response by the concerned authorities so as to provide Palestinian refugees with identity and travel documents.

Palestinian refugees who entered the Syrian territories in 1948 are granted their basic rights in Syria but are not eligible for citizenship and elections. Most of those who entered the country in 1970 have, however, been denied easy access to identity and travel documents.

Dozens of refugees fled to Jordan before they moved to such destinations as Jordan and Egypt after they were forced out of their homes in the Israeli-blockaded Gaza Strip and occupied West Bank.
