Torrential Rain in Istanbul Claims Life of Palestinian Refugee

Palestinian refugee Ahmad Mohamed Shaabaan, born on October 7, 1981, was pronounced dead as a result of the rainstorm that hit Istanbul city on Tuesday, June 23.

Ahmad, who fled Yarmouk Camp to Turkey, drowned in the rain deluges that swamped his home in Esenyurt, west of Istanbul.

Activists said the refugee suffered serious health disorders, including hepatitis and foot tumor. He failed to pay treatment charges due to his frail legal status. His frequent appeals for urgent humanitarian assistance have gone unheeded.

Recently, Palestinian refugees from Syria in Turkey have expressed concerns over their deteriorating condition particularly in light of the new movement clampdown imposed across Turkish provinces as part of anti-coronavirus measures.

A large number of companies, factories, and shops shut their doors for fear of further COVID-19 contaminations. Several Palestinian families have lost their sole sources of income as a result.
