28 Palestinian and Syrian NGOs and CSOs sent a memorandum of objection to the United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for Syria, Geir O. Pedersen of Norway, to warn of the impact of the new master plan issued by Damascus Governorate to reconstruct Yarmouk Camp for Palestinian refugees, in Damascus.
The memorandum said the new plan strips the residents of their ownership and property rights and blurs the geo-historical identity of the camp. Several destroyed buildings and facilities will also be removed as part of the new plan.
It added that such measures will prevent Yarmouk residents from returning to the camp due to delays in reconstruction and their inability to get alternative houses.
The memorandum said such measures contravene human rights laws, international conventions, and the Syrian constitution, protecting ownership rights.
Palestinian refugees and human rights groups continue to voice their firm rejection of the new reconstruction plan for Yarmouk Camp, which has been subjected to massive destruction in the bloody conflict.
Tension has been running high in the area as thousands of refugees continue to rail against the proposed plan, amid growing fears that their homes and property will be removed from the new plan.
