Palestinian Refugees Living Below Poverty Line in Syria

The conflict in Syria has led to a food safety disaster in the country, with 93 percent of the population living in poverty.

A number of factors have led to this reality, including the monopoly the armed groups have on sources of food.

The protracted displacement, deteriorating socio-economic conditions, dire humanitarian needs and protection concerns continue to affect the lives of Palestine refugees in Syria.

UN data indicates that the protracted conflict has devastated human security and left 91 per cent of the 438,000 Palestine refugees estimated to remain in the country in absolute poverty and 40 per cent displaced.

Due to the serious protection gaps, children have been forced to drop out of school and join armed groups to help feed their starving families.

The families also continue to express fear that they won’t be able to cook their food or keep the cold out of their homes this year due to fuel dearth, as a cold winter season has unlocked its gates.

The refugees have launched into a tirade against the malpractices of Syria’s burgeoning black oil market, fuel shortages, and—most of all—the exorbitant prices of wood and fuel charged by corrupt officials and traders.

Desperate for warmth, displaced Palestinian and Syrian families taking refuge in under-equipped camps and substandard facilities have been burning their clothes and plastic materials to stave off winter cold after they failed to afford firewood and fuel supplies.

On the International Human Solidarity Day (IHSD), annually observed by the United Nations on December 20, AGPS called on the international community, particularly UNRWA, to take further action in order to provide the Palestinians of Syria with the physical and legal protection they quite urgently need at such a critical time.

The International Human Solidarity Day (IHSD), observed on December 20, is an international annual unity day of the United Nations and its member states introduced by the general assembly during the 2005 World Summit. It was established on December 22, 2005 by resolution 60/209.

AGPS also urges the Palestinian Authority and its diplomatic missions to work on lifting movement sanctions on Palestinian refugees in host countries, as decreed by international humanitarian law.
