The Action Group calls for not destabilizing the legal status of Palestinians in Syria

 London | The Action Group

The Action Group for Palestinians in Syria is following the statement issued by Palestinian parties regarding the reformulation of the terms of reference for Palestinian refugees in Syria, and the references it contains that contradict the legal and human rights reality of Palestinians in the country.

The group affirms that the legal presence of Palestinians in Syria is subject to the Syrian legal and legislative framework, most notably Law No. 260 of 1956, which granted Palestinians the same rights and duties granted to Syrian citizens, with the exception of the right to run for office and vote.

The group believes that any attempt to restructure Palestinian terms of reference by forming new committees or bodies would jeopardize the stable legal status of Palestinians in Syria.

The group stresses that Palestinians in Syria are not part of the Oslo Agreement arrangements or any other political framework outside Syrian laws, and any infringement of the legal framework for Palestinians could undermine their status within the Syrian social fabric, which has always supported their national cause.

The group affirms that the General Authority for Palestinian Arab Refugees is the official body that regulates the legal and civil affairs of Palestinians in accordance with Syrian laws.

Accordingly, preserving this reference is a guarantee for the unity and cohesion of the Palestinian position within the Syrian state.

The group also calls on the Syrian leadership to:

 1. Preserve the laws and legislation regulating the status of Palestinians, including laws issued since 1949, and Law No. 260 of 1956, which granted Palestinians their distinguished legal status.

2. Protect the legal status of Palestinians from any interventions or attempts at restructuring that may negatively affect their rights.

 3. Work to update the laws to ensure the achievement of the principle of justice, equality and unity of destiny, in line with the decisions of the Arab League, especially the Casablanca Protocol of 1965.

The group affirms that Palestinians in Syria are an integral part of the Syrian national fabric, and that any attempt to change their legal status or official reference will be met with popular and legal rejection.

It also calls on all concerned parties to respect the legal privacy of Palestinians in Syria, and to work to strengthen their unity in a way that serves their national cause.
