Khan Dunoun Camp: High Kindergarten Costs Burden Families

Action Group | Rif Dimashq

Palestinian refugees in Khan Dunoun Camp, Rif Dimashq, are grappling with a severe crisis as skyrocketing kindergarten fees place an unbearable burden on families already struggling under harsh economic conditions and limited incomes.

Families interviewed by the Action Group have reported a sharp decline in kindergarten enrollment rates compared to previous years. This decline has been attributed to mounting financial pressures, compounded by overlapping expenses for religious occasions such as Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha, alongside regular school-related costs.

The average cost of enrolling a child in kindergarten ranges between 700,000 and 1 million Syrian pounds—an amount far beyond the means of most residents amid the worsening economic crisis.

Umm Yazan, a mother from the camp, shared her plight: “My husband works as a cleaner with a monthly income of just 290,000 Syrian pounds, and he suffers from multiple health issues. We can hardly meet our daily needs, let alone afford kindergarten fees.” She added: “No charity or humanitarian organization has stepped in to address our suffering or provide assistance.”

The high costs have sparked widespread debate within the camp, highlighting a lack of equality among children. Some children from wealthier families benefit from kindergartens and the developmental activities they offer, while others are deprived due to financial hardships. This disparity threatens to widen cognitive gaps and undermine the principle of equal opportunities for pre-school children.

It is worth noting that Khan Dunoun Camp residents have endured years of deteriorating living and economic conditions, with no practical solutions in sight to ease their suffering or meet their basic needs.
