Handarat camp residents appeal to UNRWA to expand food assistance

Action Group | Aleppo
The residents of Ein el-Tal (Handarat) camp have made an urgent appeal to Mr. Michael Amanya, Director General of UNRWA Affairs, to intervene and review the decision to provide food baskets only to the most needy cases in the camp, which will be limited to about 90 families, while depriving about 100 other families suffering from similar conditions.

In a statement issued by the residents, they expressed their thanks to UNRWA for the support provided over the past years, while pointing out the economic and social challenges that most of the camp’s residents suffer from. The statement explained that the camp lacks job opportunities and basic services, suffers from a lack of electricity and water, and the destruction of infrastructure, in addition to the camp’s distance from the city center and the difficulty of reaching it due to the lack of transportation.
The residents also pointed to the deterioration of the security situation as a result of tensions with the Kurds, which cause sniper incidents on the main road leading to the camp, in addition to the repeated clashes in nearby areas, which increases the suffering of the residents.

The residents called on UNRWA to take into account these exceptional circumstances and provide food aid to all camp residents, considering that they are all in dire need of support, and not to be limited to a specific category.

This appeal comes amid a financial crisis facing UNRWA as a result of the cessation of donations from some countries, but the residents stress the need to find fair solutions to ensure that no needy families are marginalized.
