Relief and Human Rights International Organizations: Shelling and Raids Targeted Children Center, Mosques, and Civilians in Khan Al Shieh Camp in Damascus Suburb

The past few weeks witnessed an escalating surge of raids that targeted Khan Al Shieh camp in Damascus suburb, which resulted in dozens of victims and injuries among residents and displaced people who escaped shelling and explosive barrels that target the adjacent villages and towns.

One of the raids resulted in a great destruction of one of children center of Jafra Foundation for relief and development, which also called for - in an earlier statement - what it called all involved military conflict parties in Syria to abide by the principles of international humanitarian law, especially the principle of humanity and proportionality.

This call came after targeting Khan Al Shieh camp in July 4, 2016, the deaths, and the complete destruction of its center; in addition to the destruction of other houses belonging to civilians, stressing that the camp maintain its city and the absence of armed manifestations inside.

UNICEF and UNRWA condemned the targeting of childhood centers at Khan Al Shieh camp through a joint statement that was published at the UNRWA's website. The two international organizations denounced the shelling of spaces for children in Khan Al Shieh camp in Syria, while the joint statement, which was published earlier this month, confirmed that the targeted space was for children and it was a haven for more than a thousand children who were visiting it on a daily basis in order to engage in educational and entertainment activities.

The AGPS documented many civilians' houses that were destroyed by frequent shelling that increased this month, as Al Huda mosque and the only water reservoir were also targeted in the middle of May.

Many AGPS reports indicated previously that health conditions inside the camp are deteriorating rapidly, since there is only one health center of UNRWA that provides only simple medical services. The UNRWA center is working with its minimum capacity, as there are only 3 doctors inside the camp.

The AGPS launched several official appeals and statements calling for international, relief, and human rights institutions, factions, and the PLO to work to stop targeting Khan Al Shieh camp, which includes thousands of civilian families who have suffered and are suffering from the scourge of war in Syria. The AGPS confirms that the continued targeting of the camp in light of the continued closure of all roads linking the camp and the center of the capital, Damascus, threatens a humanitarian disaster may affect the lives of 12 thousand civilians in the camp.

Documented statistics of the AGPS show that 177 Palestinian refugees, including women and children, from Khan Al Sheikh camp have died during the ongoing war in Syria.
