Under the title of “Breaking down Stereotypes” UNRWA launched a photography competition funded by EU to all young Palestinians for the year 2016. UNRWA invited through its social media website all young Palestine refugees to challenge the complications and variety of the Palestine identity and trying new simple stereotypes through photography. UNRWA called all participants to look at the stereotypes that they see through mass media and addresses about the Palestinian refugees in the pictures-in regional and local levels- and to use creativity in reflecting that those pictures don’t reflect reality.
UNRWA said that the Photography competition for this year insures that the Palestinian refugees are the best defenders for their own case through their private experience and to challenge the wrong understanding for their case as the so called saying” the Palestine refugees are not victims and they are really determining their fate”. In the same context, the EU-UNRWA photography completion is an open invitation to all young Palestine refugees between 19-29 years to challenge stereotype through photography and show the world what it means to be a Palestine refugee and the photos should be new in 2016 and taken by the participant himself, moreover, the deadline for the competition is Monday 24th of October 2016 at 11:59 pm and the committee will not accept any photo after that. The photos will be judged by a committee of UNRWA, EU in addition to two professional Palestinian photographers and prizes will be distributed to winners.
It is noted that the young Palestinian Refugee Neraz Saeed from Yarmouk camp won the prize in 2014 for his photo of the Three Angels. The Three Angel photo is for three brothers waiting their turn to get out of Yarmouk camp to get treatment out of it and their faces were full of waiting, fear, and exhaustion. Neraz was arrested by the Syrian regime after getting out of the camp to Damascus and till now no one knows his fate of the place of detention.
