AGPS: Estimated Number of Palestinians of Syria in Lebanon Shrinks to 30,000

AGPS estimates that the number of Palestinians of Syria sheltered in Lebanon is very likely to shrink to 30,000 in 2017, down from 42,000 in the past few years.

AGPS attributes the decline in the number of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon to the dire living conditions in the Lebanese refugee camps and the high unemployment rates, along with the cut of relief services and assistance by such organizations as UNRWA, among other charities.

Other refugees fled to Europe as they sought out smoother procedures to reunite with their families and children.

According to AGPS, the decline stems primarily from a decision slapped by the Lebanese authorities in early May 2014 banning the entry of Palestinian refugees from Syria into Lebanon.

According to UNRWA figures, nearly 80,000 refugees were registered with the agency in the start of 2013. However, in July 2013 the number was estimated at 42,444, compared to 44,431 in November 2014 and 42,500 in the start of 2015.
