7 Palestinian Refugees Aggressively Attacked on Greek Island of Chios

Reporting from the Greek Island of Chios, AGPS news correspondent said Afghani refugees aggressively attacked Palestinians sheltered on the island.

Most of the Palestinians taking refuge in the area have fled war-ragged Syria, among other beleaguered territories.

Seven Palestinian refugees sustained wounds, including two in critical conditions.

The refugees were attacked as they attempted to defend a 14-year-old Gazan who was violently beaten by refugees taking cover on the island.

The assailants wielded cold weapons and wreaked havoc on Palestinian makeshift tents before they stole the refugees’ belongings.

Speaking with AGPS, the injured Palestinian-Syrian refugee Iyad Mohamed said six Palestinian refugees from Syria and another from the blockaded Gaza Strip were injured in the assault and were rushed to a Greek hospital for urgent treatment.

Two refugees, including a resident of Deraa Camp in Syria, were transferred to an intensive care unit due to the critical wounds inflicted by the attack.

AGPS field reporter identified one of the victims as Yasser Abu Arafat a resident of Deraa Camp, in southern Syria. The latter has been diagnosed with a critical internal hemorrhage and a rib fracture. Youngster Hazim Oukel, a resident of Damascus-based Yarmouk Camp, suffered hand and leg fractures, along with bruises all over his body. Meanwhile, Iyad Mohamed, from Al-Husseiniya Camp, in Rural Damascus, suffered finger fractures and head injuries. Youngster Bahaa Abu Haya, from the blockaded Gaza Strip, fell into a coma.

The refugees have gone homeless and could not reach their shelters in Souda and Vial camps after they received death threats from the gangsters.

The Palestinian refugees slammed the apathy maintained by the Greek police vis-à-vis such frequent assaults.

“We have repeatedly appealed to the Greek police to transfer us to safer shelters but to no avail as none of our appeals have been taken into consideration,” said one of the injured Palestinian refugees.

Palestinian asylum seekers in Chios urged the Palestinian embassy and ambassador in Greece, Marwan Tubasi, to immediately step in and transfer the refugees to safer regions before it is too late.

400 Palestinians, mostly from the Syrian refugee camps of Yarmouk, Deraa, Al-Aydeen, and Al-Husseiniya, have been seeking refuge on the Greek Islands, namely Lesbos, Chios, Leros, and Kos. Most of the refugees have been on tenterhooks to reunite with their families and children as the raging warfare severed the ties that kept them together.
