UNICEF Calls for Urgent Protection of Children Stranded in Greece, Balkans

UNICEF called for urgent action to safeguard children stranded in Greece and the Balkans.

24,000 refugee children, predominately from the Syrian Arab Republic, Iraq, and Afghanistan, have been subjected to a calamitous situation in Greece and the Balkans.

UNICEF sounded the alarm over the abject conditions endured by dozens of toddlers and newborns living in overcrowded shelters. Many children have experienced violence, abuse or exploitation.

Children who are stranded and on the move need protection and families need to be kept together to protect and safeguard children.

Most of those stranded in Greece and the Balkans have also been bereaved of access to learning, health and other quality services.

UNICEF spokeswoman in Geneva Sarah Crowe warned of the traumatic upshots of the crisis on the refugee and migrant children.

Thousands of Palestinian and Syrian refugees have been grappling with dismal living conditions in sub-standard and under-equipped shelters in Greece and the Balkans after several European countries closed their doors before the refugees and asylum-seekers from conflict zones.
