UNRWA Launches Regional Crisis Emergency Appeal to Support Palestinian Refugees Affected by Debilitating Syrian Warfare

To support the Palestinian refugee community affected by the debilitating conflict in Syria, UNRWA has launched its 2017 Syria Regional Crisis Emergency Appeal.

Speaking at an international conference held in Finland, UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl said 430,000 Palestinian refugees are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, among whom 280,000 are internally displaced and 43,000 are trapped in hard-to-reach or inaccessible locations.

According to Krähenbühl, around 30,000 Palestinians from Syria displaced to Lebanon and 17,000 others to Jordan have been pushed into a precarious and marginalized existence due to their uncertain legal status.

He added that another generation of refugees in Syria has been gone traumatized due to displacement and human and material loss.

UNRWA further stated that over US$ 411 million is required for desperately needed humanitarian support in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan to ensure that Palestinian refugees have access to education, health care, youth development and protection services, among others.

Through its programs and engagement with relevant duty bearers, UNRWA regularly advocates for the respect of the rights of Palestinian refugees.

The agency pledged that it will continue to advocate for safe, unhindered and sustained access to meet the needs of Palestinian refugees affected by the crisis in Syria, particularly in hard-to-reach and besieged areas, and in accordance with international law.
