Palestinian Refugees in Southern Syria Deprived of Firewood

Palestinian refugee families in southern Damascus have been grappling with a trouble-stricken situation trying to secure firewood with the advent of a freezing winter season.

A local activist said refugees’ need of firewood is no less vital than their need of life-saving food packages. Activists sounded the alarm over the swift price hike, forcing refugees to purchase firewood at up to 100 Syrian Pounds in Yalda, Babila, and Beit Sahem, where thousands of Palestinian refugees displaced from Yarmouk Camp have been taking cover.

In Yarmouk a kilogram of firewood is estimated at 35 SYP. A family needs an average of 20 kilograms of firewood per day to cope with frosty temperatures.

Refugees displaced from Yarmouk and the impoverished residents of southern Damascus called for allowing a free entry of fuel and gas reserves urgently needed for heating and cooking.

A tough blockade has been imposed by the Syrian government forces and their war abettors on Yarmouk Camp, blocking the delivery of much-needed aids and foodstuff into the shelter. ISIS militias have also grabbed hold of large parts of the camp.
