On the International Day for the Right to the Truth, the fate of thousands of Palestinian refugees remains shrouded in mystery in war-torn Syria.
AGPS kept record of the incarceration of 1,180 Palestinians in Syrian government penitentiaries, among whom 86 female refugees.
Affidavits by ex-detainees provided evidence on the involvement of Syrian government officers in harsh torture tactics, including electric shocks and heavy beating using whips and iron sticks, against Palestinian detainees, among whom women, in flagrant violations of the Declaration on the Protection of Women and Children in Emergency and Armed Conflict adopted by the United Nations in 1974. Article 5 of the declaration criminalizes all forms of repression and mistreatment against women and children, including imprisonment and torture.
456 Palestinians were, meanwhile, tortured to death in Syrian government lock-ups, including women, children, and elderly civilians. AGPS estimates the real number to be far higher due to the gag orders slapped by the Syrian government on the detainees’ names and fates, along with the families’ reluctance to report such cases for fear of retaliation.
Withholding the bodies of slain civilians is prohibited under international law, except in cases where pillage and mistreatment are feared to occur. The Fourth Geneva Convention, the Hague Convention, and the Rome Statute consider the despoliation and mistreatment of dead bodies war crimes.
Activists called for internationalizing the cause and appealing to international courts and human rights institutions to urge the Syrian regime to disclose the fate of several Palestinian held in government lock-ups and to release the bodies of those tortured to death.
AGPS renews its demand to the Syrian Regime to release and disclose the fate of hundreds of Palestinian detainees who have gone missing so far.
Many reports issued by AGPS, such as “Enforced Disappearance 1,” “Enforced Disappearance 2,” and the “Pictures Massacre,” provided details about the Palestinian victims of torture or enforced disappearance during the bloody conflict.
