The Future of the Palestinians of Syria.

By: Dr. Isam Idwan

The Palestinian people in Syria have severely suffered during the four years of the Syrian Crises, while more than 2600 Palestinians were killed and injured, as well as most refugee camps were demolished and a large number of Palestinian refugees became homeless in and outside of Syria.

Migration from Syria to Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Turkey, or even Europe did not provide protection or essential needs for the Palestinian refugees; they were treated as if they were not humans and unwelcomed everywhere they go to seek for secure and dignified life.

The PLA, which is supposed to care about the Palestinian refugees' affairs wherever they are, in addition to the PA and the Palestinian factions were helpless to intervene in order to solve the problem of the Palestinians of Syria or to secure protection for them, even they were helpless to make any improvements in their case. The Palestinians of Syria refugees remained forgotten facing their fate alone.

The absence of the vision and the work plan imposed a standstill state, therefore, there is no way out of this crisis, suffered by the Palestinian people in Syria, but to put a theoretical conception in the form of a vision and a work plan before implementing any field mobilization, otherwise, every action without vision, goal or strategies will be a waste of time.

Who starts the first step? An easy and difficult question, with the easiness of this question, every Palestinian faction and every Palestinian institution would be able to begin the first step. However, it is extremely difficult, in light of the factional infighting that makes all issues of the Palestinian people in a place of factional and ideological dispute. Neither any one would do it nor dare to make the initiative without an agreement with others.

However the moral, humanitarian, religious, and national responsibility is imposed on everyone who has a conscience to initiate all his energy to eject the Palestinians of Syria from their crisis peacefully. I see that not accomplishing this duty instantaneously, and without hesitation, is considered a negligence of the responsibility and betrayal of the people and the case.

The Supposed Action Direction:

The problem of the Palestinians of Syria is that they have no homeland to protect and haven them, and to ensure their return to their former lives, even when the Syrian crisis is over. It would be naive to bet on Lebanon to accommodate them as Jordan rejects them, as well as Turkey, Europe and the rest of the countries in the world. We always remember that these Palestinians did not come down from the moon to replace in Syria, but they were expelled from their occupied land by  Israel in the north of Palestine; Safed, Tiberias, Acre, Haifa, and Nazareth.

Today, Israel is the only country that feels not threatened of the Palestinians migration; since the refugees resorted to the entire world, but their occupied land, which is still empty for the moment.  This is a particular fault why does Israel remain safe? Why does Israel disclaim its responsibility toward all the accumulated crises it created for the refugees? Why it does not abide by the international resolutions that recognized the right of the Palestinian refugees' return to their land and properties and to compensate them for their grief? The real and radical solution to the Palestinian refugees' problem is to direct the effort towards the Palestinians of Syria return to their home in Galilee.

The first step of this direction is to agree on the fact that this is the solution. In my modest opinion, “everyone who does not believe on this does not believe on the refugees' right of return and compensation as well”. As long as we say this is their right, we should put a tight theoretical mechanism of return, and how to oblige Israel to comply with it, and if we achieved this in a determined time frame by a strategic plan, we will win a part of our major cause and will save our people in Syria.

Yet, If we fail, we will alert Israel and its allies, and it will be obvious to them and to the entire world that if the Palestinians of Syria problem was not solved, then Israel will live in accumulated crises, which will pay the major countries to put pressure on the conflict parties in Syria to neutralize the Palestinians so as not to push them toward Israel. In both cases we would help our people, improve our cause, and embarrass our enemy, and then who will take the first step?
