Over 1,600 Palestinians Enduring Mysterious Fate in Syrian Lock-Ups

AGPS, London

Documentation Team said 1,604 Palestinians have been enduring mysterious fates in Syrian government lock-ups, among whom 99 female refugees. Reports have also emerged on dozens of cases killed under torture in government penitentiaries.

The number is expected to be far higher due the government’s reticence to disclose the fate of the detainees and the families’ fears to report missing relatives for fear of retaliation.

Sworn affidavits by ex-prisoners provided evidence for harsh torture tactics and oppressive penal policies perpetrated against women, Palestinians in particular, in Syrian jails. Torture tactics included electric shocks, heavy beating using whips and iron sticks, and sexual abuse.

AGPS urges the Syrian government to disclose the fate of hundreds of Palestinian detainees. AGPS believes the torture tactics perpetrated in its lock-ups amount to “a barefaced war crime.”
