Pro-Syria Gov’t Parties: Withdrawal of AlNusra, ISIS from Yarmouk Camp Just Round the Corner

Reports have emerged on the imminent retreat of ISIS and AlNusra Front from Yarmouk Camp, shortly after a number of wounded AlNusra affiliates retreated to Idlib as part of the four-town agreement struck between the Syrian government and opposition groups.

Secretary of the Alliance of Palestinian Forces in Syria, Khaled Abdul Majid, said the terms of a reconciliation agreement reached a few weeks earlier over the situation in Yarmouk, which rules for the retreat of ISIS and AlNusra militias from southern Damascus, are to be put into effect early next week.

Abdul Majid told Syrian news sources that ISIS and AlNusra fighters have been gearing up to withdraw from the camp and that the agreement is to be enforced in two stages so as to ensure the retreat of ISIS and AlNusra to AlRiqa and Idlib following the submission of lists comprising the names of combatants who wish to head to eastern Syria or to have their situation worked out in the camp.

In the meantime, Palestinians have been on tenterhooks in anticipation of the fate to be undergone by Yarmouk residents, among other communities sheltered in southern Damascus.

Activists expressed concerns over the repercussions of the government’s takeover of southern Damascus zones, which they said will leave civilians in such a situation where the sweetest option tastes very bitter as the residents will have to either join the government forces or else to leave the area for fear of being kidnapped by the government troops and forced into military conscription.

Thousands of Palestinian refugees were forced out of Yarmouk after the Syrian government warplanes bombarded the camp. Shortly afterwards, a tough blockade has been slapped on the area by the regime troops at the same time as power and water supplies have been chronically cut off. ISIS infiltration into the camp forced thousands of Palestinian refugees to seek shelter in adjacent towns.
