Commission 302 Urges UNRWA to Assume Its Duties Regarding Handarat Returnees

Commission 302 to Defend Refugee Rights called on UNRWA to urgently step in and work on providing the Palestinian refugees who returned to Handarat Camp, northeast of Aleppo, prior to Eid Alfitr, with humanitarian assistance.

The commission said in a statement that Handarat residents, estimated at 6,000 persons in 2011, had been denied access to their homes for over four years. Most of the residents who were forced out of their homes had sought shelter in Aleppo and AlNeirab Camp.

The commission cited a UNRWA statement issued in April 2013, in which the agency expressed concern over the deportation of 6,000 Palestinians on April 26, 2013 from Handarat.

The statement held UNRWA responsible for the safety of Handarat refugees, though the camp does not fall within the agency’s field of operations.
