Palestinians from Syria Forced Out of Lebanon

The number of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon has remarkably declined over the past couple of years. According to UNRWA statistics, 31,850 Palestinian refugees have sought refuge in Lebanon until January 2017, down from 84,000 in 2013 and 53,077 in 2014.

Palestinian refugees from Syria are reported to lack legal status in Lebanon. The absence of specific legislation addressing the unique situation of the Palestinians of Syria has made them vulnerable to marginalization within the Lebanese polity, both as inpiduals and as a community.

Besides, Palestinian refugees from Syria in Lebanon are treated as foreigners rather than as refugees and are, thus, denied the right to renewed stays and subjected to forced deportation.

Palestinian refugees from Syria in Lebanon have faced difficulties with respect to their access to education. Palestinians have fewer chances to enroll at Lebanon schools compared to other refugee communities due to restrictions and steep education fees which far outpace the refugees’ budgets. Besides, refugees’ academic output has been affected by the striking pergences between the Syrian and Lebanese curricula, resulting in a dramatic increase in school drop-outs.

The situation has gone downhill due to the refugees’ lack of access to the labor market and absence of assistance by such relief institutions as UNRWA.

Hundreds of refugees embarked on life-threatening journeys onboard the “death boats” to Europe, seeking a safer shelter.
