Swedish News Outlets: Minors Shorn of Right to Family Reunification

Swedish news sources said abandoned minors seeking asylum in Sweden lose the right to reunite with their families in the kingdom as soon as they are granted the Swedish citizenship.

According to the Swedish law, only foreigners and non-Swedish nationals have the right to family reunification.

Sweden’s migration law of 1997 stipulates that minors who get married or obtain the Swedish citizenship be not entitled to family reunification.

In a complaint emailed to AGPS sometime earlier, a Palestinian family from Syria said it has been banned from reuniting with their son on account that he had been granted the Swedish citizenship.

Stateless children in Sweden become Swedish nationals if they lived in Sweden for two years.
