AGPS: Palestinian Refugees Caught between the Hammer and the Anvil in War-Ravaged Syria

AGPS staff member Maher Shawish sounded the alarm over the tragic situation endured by the Palestinians of Syria, whom he said have been trapped between the hammer of warfare and the anvil of impoverishment.

Speaking with Filasteen Online news site, Shawish said about 95% of the 450, 000 Palestinian refugees in tattered Syria are in need of urgent assistance and that 280,000 have become internally displaced, while 100,000 others are not registered with UNRWA.

Shawish further pushed for protecting the Palestinian refugees trapped inside refugee camps across Syria and for providing them with the needed humanitarian and relief assistance.

AGPS staff member held the Palestinian decision-makers accountable for the tragedy of the Palestinians of Syria and pressed for the need to activate the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which presents itself as Palestinians’ sole legitimate speaker nationwide and overseas, and to take serious steps to work out such a calamitous state of affairs.

He added that the PLO’s department of refugee affairs should be held to account as to its failure to live up to the needs and demands of the Palestinian refugee community in Syria.

“How many detainees has the PLO freed from Syrian jails? How many refugees has it provided shelter to?” wondered Shawish. “PLO ties with the Syrian regime are just futile.”
