UNRWA: 254,000 Palestinians Displaced in War-Torn Syria

UNRWA latest population figures in Syria, based on the 2016 verification exercise, said 60% of the 438,000 Palestinian refugees remaining in Syria have been subjected to displacement at least once across the Syrian territories.

According to the agency, 418,000 inpiduals rely on humanitarian assistance to survive, representing 95 per cent of the total Palestinian refugee population in the country. Approximately 254,000 have become internally displaced within Syria.

Over 12,500 Palestinian refugees and Syrians have taken refuge in 37 temporary collective shelters managed and supported by UNRWA across Syria.

UNRWA said life in a collective shelter can be stressful. Residents have left behind their homes, livelihoods and communities for an uncertain future and immense hardship. The adjustment to the lack of privacy and overcrowded conditions is difficult.

Over 120,000 Palestinians from Syria fled the country, among them 31,000 to Lebanon and 17 others to Jordan.
