Palestinian Refugee in Austria Returns to AlMzeirib Town

Palestinian refugee Moufeq Abu Shella returned from Austria to AlMzeirib town, in Daraa, south of Syria, saying the dreams he has always yearned for have not come true in the new destination.

Fleeing war-torn Syria, Abu Shella embarked on a life-threatening journey, crossing dozens of miles on foot and onboard “death boats” to reach Austria a year and a half ago in the hunt for a safe shelter.

Abu Shella faced difficulties integrating into the host community, which has a set of beliefs, cultural values, habits, and languages different from his own.

Not very much dissimilar from the situation endured by thousands of refugees in Europe, Abu Shella failed to reunite with his family, a process that might take a minimum of six years to see the day.

Like many other European countries, Austria has opted for a closed-door immigration policy in an attempt to rein in the influx of refugees and asylum-seekers from war-ravaged zones.
