ISIS Bans Access to Southern Damascus Schools, Closes Off Yalda Checkpoint before Students and Teaching Staff

ISIS militias south of Damascus have declared education outside of ISIS-run schools “illegitimate”, forcing students stranded in Yarmouk Camp to enroll at ISIS schools in the area.

At the same time, ISIS sealed off the main thoroughfare between Yarmouk and Yalda, blocking students’ and teachers’ access out of and into the area. ISIS also rescinded their personal identity documents so as to prevent them from joining schools run by UNRWA and the General Commission for Palestine Refugees in Damascus.

Local activists dubbed the crackdowns barefaced signs of a preplanned scheme to forcibly deport Yarmouk’s stranded residents.

School drop-outs among Yarmouk students have been on the rise due to the tough restrictions enforced by ISIS on civilians’ access to education and on school curricula.
