The spread of motorcycles phenomenon… death wandering down the alleys of Neirab camp

In Aleppo, the lanes and alleys of Neirab refugee camp are witnessing a new phenomenon which has never happened, even before the outbreak of war in Syria. It is the spread of motorcycles that are becoming a real threat to the safety of the camp’s residents.

According to AGPS’s correspondent, a number of horrific accidents have occurred because safety and security standards are not being complied to. Motorists are driving their vehicles at insane speeds inside the camp’s alleys, without taking into consideration the presence of children, women and elderly civilians.

Since the outbreak of the Syrian war in 2011, chaos has prevailed, unemployment has become rampant and poverty has increased among youth, who have had to accept any job opportunity to secure a living for them and their families. Many young people have volunteered in popular committees and the Jerusalem Brigade that are affiliated to the Syrian army. This way, they are confident that they will not be held accountable for their madness, because they are representatives of the authority inside the camps. As a result, they organize races inside the camps and on “Death Street” that is located in the New Street area, close to the railway. The street was given this name after the increase of motorcyclists’ injuries on it.

On their part, residents of Neirab camp blamed the Jerusalem Brigade, currently in control of the camp, for the security chaos and the disregard to human life, especially that a number of motorcyclists are members of the Jerusalem Brigade. The residents also requested that a system be applied to monitor and control this reckless behavior.

According to a media source, 12 injuries have been recorded in July, mostly children, due to accidents involving motorcycles.
