Under the title The Palestinian- Syrian Student “Reality and Prospects,” AGPS released a 42-page documentation report, which examines the repercussions of the Syrian crisis on all segments of Palestinian society in general, and the Palestinian-Syrian student and the educational process in particular. It highlights the student’s suffering from setbacks in the educational aspect because of the prolongation of the Syrian crisis, both inside Syria and in some of the countries they fled to such as Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey and the EU countries.
The report pointed out that in light of the fierce battles in Syria, hundreds of thousands of the Syrian people lost their rights for education. Almost 5000 schools have been used as shelter centers, field hospitals or detention centers, while others have been bombarded with rockets and explosive cylinders.
At the same time, UNRWA schools in Syria, where most Palestinian students receive their main education in Palestinian camps and gatherings, have been partially or totally destroyed or used for purposes other than what they were made for. 62 out of 118 schools have been taken out of service.
Repeated displacement in Syria and immigration have denied thousands of Palestinian students the access to education, exacerbating the suffering of their families, as they witness their children’s futures being shattered, idol.
The Action Group confirmed in its report that the newsrooms lacked reports and studies about this part of the life of the Palestinians in Syria amid the Syrian crisis, both in and outside Syria. There are however dozens of reports dealing with the suffering of Syrian students, which intersects in some aspects with Palestinian students and differs in others.
The statistics used in the report The Palestinian- Syrian Student “Reality and Prospects” were based on official figures obtained from official bodies such as UNRWA and UNHCR, as well as the field monitoring that was carried out by AGPS’s Monitoring and Documentation Team through its network of reporters. There were difficulties in some countries due to the scarcity of information, but they were overcome by contacting the students living there and documenting their testimonies about their suffering in order to continue their education.
