The Syrian regime continues to detain the writer, “Aly Al-Shehaby” for the fifth consecutive year

The Syrian regime continues to detain the Palestinian writer, “Aly Saeed Shehaby,” resident of Yarmouk camp, for the fifth consecutive year. Shehaby was arrested on 17th of December 2012.

Shehaby who worked as an English teacher in one of UNRWA’s schools, was detained for the first time in 1974, for 9 months in the Mezzah Military Prison. In 1982, he was detained for almost 10 years, on charges of supporting the Syrian Communist Labour Party (opposing to the regime), until he was released in 1991.

In 2006, Shehaby was detained for 7 months for being accused of seeking to establish a Syrian political party carrying the name, Syrian Mainstream for All, and for singing the Beirut-Damascus Declaration. Several humanitarian organizations, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have demanded his release, but the regime did not respond to their requests.
