“Child labor” spreads among the Palestinian-Syrian refugees in the areas of their asylum

Almost seven years since the start of the Syrian war, thousands of Palestinian-Syrian refugees have been forced to flee to the neighboring countries, where they are facing extremely harsh economic and legal conditions, especially with the clear dereliction of the Palestinian embassies and concerned international organizations, including UNRWA.

Due to these harsh conditions, dozens of refugee children have been forced to leave their schools and find work to support their families in providing the high living expenses. They have had to work in jobs that are unsuitable for their ages and the nature of their weak bodies. The difficult jobs they have enrolled in include carrying heavy boxes, collecting rubbish and washing cars.

Palestinian activists believe that the main reason for Palestinian-Syrian child labor, especially the neighboring countries to Syria, is UNRWA’s dereliction in doing its duties towards the refugee children and their families, in addition to the absence of an actual role of the Palestinian embassy, in working towards reducing the suffering of the refugees.

The situation of the Palestinian-Syrian refugee children in Syria is similar to that of those who have fled the country, due to the unemployment and security tension, as well as the lack of schools in some cities that they have been displaced to in Syria.
