Palestinian-Syrian girl, “Aya Tayseer Shehada” threatened with paralysis due to a fatal medical error

Palestinian refugee “Aya Tayseer Shehada,” born in 1998, and a displaced resident of Yarmouk camp to Lebanon, has appealed to the Action Group, about her threat of being paralyzed in her left foot, due to medical negligence and the inexperienced doctor that performed a joint implant surgery on her.

In the details, Aya says that during her stay in Syria, which she returned to from Lebanon in May 2016 to take her secondary school examinations, she felt severe pain in her foot. She referred to Doctor “Ibrahim Yassin Faaour,” a specialist in bone and joint diseases. After checking her and seeing her xrays, he told her that she has a dislocated thigh and must go under surgery to replace her left thigh joint, with an artificial one. She adds that the severe pain she suffered made her agree to go under surgery in Jaffa Hospital in Damascus, however after the operation she completely lost sense of her foot and her ability to move it, as well as a swollen left foot. Doctor Ibrahim told her that her foot is still under the influence of the anesthetic, and when she replied that the effect of an anesthetic cannot last for two weeks long, he avoided her questions then refused to meet her again.

Aya continues her tragedy saying that after she lost hope in reaching the doctor, who is supposedly known as the king of mercy, she went to another specialist and presented her case, to acknowledge the catastrophe that the surgery had damaged the joint and led to her inability to stand with stability and that the left thigh had stretched, as well as causing her weakened knee muscles and in the tight-belt muscles.

According to Aya, she referred to a number of doctors to undergo another surgery, however they all asserted that at her young age, she only required physiotherapy to help put the joint back in place, without needing to go under surgery.

Aya called on all the specialized bodies, the International Red Crescent and the Human Rights Organizations, to intervene in order to hold that doctor, who is reckless with people's lives, and who has not owned up to his mistake yet, and to withdraw the certificate provided to him to practice in the medical field, according to Aya, because the doctor harmed many patients. She added that her case was not the first and will not be the last on the hands of this doctor.
