The Palestinians in the town of Az Zababeyah in the suburbs of Damascus are living in tough conditions, because of the security grip and demographic change. The Action Group revealed in its latest annual report for the year 2017, which was published in February 2018 under the title, “Palestinians of Syria… Between Promises and Restrictions,” that the Syrian regime allowed hundreds of people from the town of Az Zababeyah, to return to their homes and properties during 2017, however the residents have lived with constant fear because of the security grip imposed by the Syrian regime on the area and the demographic change which has occurred.
Palestinian refugees confirmed on the 17th of February 2017, that after the displaced Palestinian and Syrian people returned to their homes in the town of Az Zababeyah in the suburbs of Damascus, they were surprised to find that families belonging to the Syrian regime had taken over their homes, pointing out that the families are from the Shiite community.
The 146-page report indicated that the Palestinian refugees accused the Syrian regime and its affiliated sectarian groups in the suburbs of Damascus, of bringing families loyal to it and the families of its fighters and housing them in the homes belonging to the Palestinian and Syrian refugees. The refugees expressed their anger at the regime's use of their period of displacement, which lasted about four years, and the storming of their homes.
The refugees said: “The families that took over our houses refused to leave them and would only reply that the regime is the decision-maker and responsible of the case.” A few of those who returned to the area were able to enter their homes and forcibly share them with the families affiliated to the regime.
The Syrian regime had opened the road for the families to return to the town of Az Zababeyah, which is home to dozens of Palestinian families, on the 6th of February 2017, after it took control over it in late-2013, and the bombardment and burning down of the area. Since then, the regime has not opened the road for the people to return once again, under the pretext of reconstruction and the restoration of the infrastructure.
According to the report, the Action Group has documented the death of 9 Palestinian refugees in the town of Az Zababeyah since the beginning of the war in Syria, as a result of the bombardments, clashes and summary executions.
Az Zababeyah is the closest town to the shrine and town of Al-Sayeda Zeinab, with only a 5 km distance between them. The town is home to 20 thousand people and is known for its green nature, surrounded by a wide area of orchards and farms. Adjacent to it are a number of towns including Hossaineyya, Khirbat Ward, Khirbat Al-Shiyab, Al-Bowayda, Sabinah and Beit Sahm.
