The Action Group for Palestinians of Syria expresses its deep concern towards the output of the Rome Conference for UNRWA’s Donor Countries, which was held on the 12th of March 2018, under the title, “Preserving Dignity and Sharing Responsibility – Mobilizing Collective Action for UNRWA.” 90 countries participated in the Conference, in addition to the UN Secretary-General, the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and other international figures. The Conference highlighted the clear shortcomings in the reduction of UNRWA's budget deficit, which continues to jeopardize the provision of essential humanitarian services to more than six million registered Palestine refugees, suffering from fragile humanitarian conditions in other countries hosting refugees.
The Action Group draws attention to the ongoing suffering of Palestinian refugees in Syria and those displaced to the host countries, and the risks that would result from the cessation of aid, because of the financial deficit, that will lead to a deterioration in the living and humanitarian conditions of approximately 440,000 Palestinian refugees registered with UNRWA in Syria, 31 thousand Palestinian-Syrians in Lebanon and 18 thousand Palestinian-Syrians in Jordan, who are relying primarily on UNRWA for its basic humanitarian services such as food, shelter, health and education, after their lives became hell, as a result of the Syrian crisis, which extends from March 2011 until now, and the consequences it has caused including displacements and impoverishment of refugees.
The Action Group demands the international community, represented by the United Nations General Assembly, not to deny the Palestinian refugee issue and to take on its responsibility towards them and provide the necessary support to save UNRWA, considering it one of the witnesses on the ongoing refugees’ case since the Palestinian Nakba in 1948 and the lifeline of more than six million refugees. The Action Group also calls upon the international community to take the initiative to allocate a stable and sustainable budget to UNRWA, to protect it from any pressure exerted on it by the donor countries or the Israeli occupation, which seeks to end UNRWA's work in preparation for the cancellation of the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes, from which they were expelled.
