Euro-Mediterranean Observatory for Human Rights said that 90% of Palestinians in Syria are lacking food security, and are therefore in desperate need of persistent humanitarian assistance, and that 93% are classified as weak or very weak, while the unemployment rate among Palestinian refugees in Syria is 52.2%.
This came in a new documentary report issued by the Observatory on the suffering of Palestinian-Syrian refugees titled, “Palestinians of Syria… Renewed Migrations,” which highlights the reality of displacement and the deteriorating humanitarian conditions for the Palestinians of Syria in the new diaspora. The report also monitors the state of homelessness and frequent asylum of Palestinians in Syria, where the number of victims of Palestinian refugees in Syria has exceeded 3600 refugees, out of the 526 thousand Palestinian refugees living in Syria.
The report indicated that the humanitarian situation lived by Palestinians of Syria may be the most difficult for the refugees in the world, in the shadow of the 7 years of devastating war in Syria, especially that they are refugees for the second time and stateless persons, making them face renewed tragedies and closed doors wherever they go.
The Euro-Mediterranean noted that its team will meet this week with the head of the Middle East and North Africa, in both the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), to discuss the situation of Palestinian refugees from Syria and the possible ways to mitigate the effects of war on them, whether its regarding the 254 thousand refugees displaced within Syria, or the 160 thousand refugees who migrated to the neighboring countries and Europe.
On his part, the Legal Adviser to the Euro-Mediterranean Observatory, Ihsan Adel said: “"The objective of the report is to highlight the renewed tragedy faced by the Palestinian-Syrians. Inside Syria, they are either internally displaced; (58% of the total Palestinian-Syrians are displaced and 13% of them are stranded in places that are difficult or impossible to reach) or targeted, if they try to get out of Syria they find the doors closed before them. Many countries refuse to allow them to enter their territories, since they are non-nationality holders or are refugees for the second time.”
Adel adds: “We want to study with the relevant UN agencies, particularly the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, what can be done for these refugees, both in terms of providing assistance to them, especially with the reduction in UNRWA's budget, or in order to communicate with the concerned countries and put an end to the abuses and pressures exerted on refugees and to open the door to asylum in front of them, as well as reducing the waiting periods for the family unification applications regarding the Palestinian refugees from Syria in Europe, and providing safe means for their immigration to them, in a legal manner”
