The United Nations calls for the safety of civilians in Yarmouk camp

The United Nations expressed its “extreme” concern, towards the safety and security of the civilians in Yarmouk camp for Palestinian refugees, in the south of Damascus., on Thursday.

The spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, told reporters at the headquarters of the International Organization in New York, “The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is deeply concerned towards the safety and security of the civilians in and around Yarmouk camp.”

He called on all warring parties to exercise maximum restraint and ensure the safety of civilians and to take all measures to prevent unnecessary damage to civilian infrastructure.

Dujarric demanded all parties to allow the evacuation of medical cases and the safe access to life-saving assistance, including food and medicine, to all the civilians besieged inside Yarmouk camp and the neighboring areas.

“Checkpoints in Yarmouk camp have been closed most of the time in the past few weeks, cutting off life lines from the camp,” he added.

According to UNRWA’s estimations, there around 12 thousand Palestinian refugees in Yarmouk camp and the surrounding areas, of which 6200 are living in the besieged Yarmouk camp since 2011. The remaining are in the neighboring towns of Yelda, Babilla and Beit Sahm, which the United Nations classifies as hard-to-reach areas.
