Media agencies quoted the Japanese government’s intention to donate $10 million to UNRWA, in order to assist in the provision of aid to the Palestinian refugees affected by the war in Syria.
This additional donation from Japan will provide Palestinian refugees from Syria with health services and emergency cash assistance, among other services, through UNRWA operations in Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.
On his part, UNRWA’s Commissioner-General, Pierre Krähenbühl, expressed his welcoming to the much needed support at this time saying: "We appreciate this generous donation from the Japanese government during this time of urgency."
UNRWA is suffering from major financial crises that have led to many downsizing of its services provided to Palestinian refugees, since the United States reduced its assistance to UNRWA.
