Turkey donates 10 million dollars to UNRWA

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), announced that it has received financial support from Turkey, of $10 million to support the Agency's core programs.

According to a statement issued by UNRWA, Turkey has also pledged to donate a total of 26 thousand metric tons of wheat flour, as part of its assistance to one million Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip.

The donation came shortly after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl, in Ankara on Tuesday.

According to the statement, Krähenbühl highlighted the importance of supporting the rights and dignities of the Palestinian refugees and the importance of Turkey’s support, which is preparing to take over the chairmanship of the UNRWA Advisory Committee in July.

"Turkey is determined to ensure that UNRWA is able to maintain its vital services in the fields of education, health care and emergency relief," Erdogan asserted.

UNRWA is suffering from major financial crises that have reduced its services provided to the Palestinian refugees, because the United States reduced its aid to UNRWA.
