The League of Arab States calls for the support of UNRWA’s budget before the start of the new school year

The Spokesman for the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Minister Plenipotentiary Mahmoud Afifi, said that Abul-Gheit received a letter from Pierre Krähenbühl, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), in which he explained the difficulty of the financial situation of the Agency, especially following the US decision to cut its contribution to the Agency's funding sharply in January.

The League of Arab States called for the need to work quickly to close the serious financial gap facing UNRWA before the start of the academic season in September.

It also called on all Arab countries to contribute to this important effort in support of stability in the region in order to avoid further serious humanitarian crises, especially in the Gaza Strip, while noting the recent Arab contributions of some $150 million from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

UNRWA is suffering from major financial crises that have led to the reduction of its services to the Palestinian refugees, since the United States reduced its aid to UNRWA.
