Palestinians from Syria Prevented from Burying Their Relatives in Lebanon

Palestinians from Syria in Lebanon said they could not find tombs to bury their dead relatives.

Palestinian activists in AlBekaa said an elderly man from Yarmouk Camp was laid to rest seven days after he was pronounced dead. A Lebanese man offered to bury him in a tomb where 14 dead bodies have been interred.

Another Palestinian refugee from Syria in Lebanon said the Lebanese authorities prevented him from burying his son outside of the Ein Hilweh refugee camp.

“You do not have the right to bury your sons in Lebanon for you are Palestinians”, the refugee quoted authorities as stating. Sometime later, a soldier at the Lebanese army allowed them in, saying only the son’s father and another person can carry out the burial procedures.

According to UNRWA statistics, 31,000 Palestinians from Syria have sought shelter in Lebanon. The Housing Census of Palestinian Camps and Gatherings in Lebanon, carried out in mid-2017, found out that the number has shrunk back to 18,601 refugees.
