Hamoud: Palestinian Refugees Outside of Syria Face Deadly Threats Upon Return to War-Torn Syria

Researcher in refugee affairs, Tareq Hamoud, said that just a small number of Palestinian and Syrian refugees who have sought shelter outside of Syria can safely regain access to the country.

Speaking with Arabi 21, Hamoud said thousands of Palestinians and Syrians cannot safely return to Syria due to the crackdowns and abduction sweeps launched by the government forces. Scores of refugees who have had their identity documents expired could not renew them as they took refuge outside of the Syrian territories.

AGPS member Mahmoud Zaghmout also said the return of refugees to Syria is a process fraught with much danger.

He told Arabi 21 that refugee camps in Syria, particularly Yarmouk, risk to go dismantled or to have their geographical area reduced. As a result, only a small number of refugees can be re-sheltered in the camp.

Zaghmout added that the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) has opened up the registration process for Palestinian refugees who seek to return to Syria. Those interested have been called to sign up at the Palestine Embassy in Lebanon.

The researcher warned of the absence of safety guarantees and practical mechanisms to ease the refugees’ access into their camps and communities.
