AGPS documented the death of 536 Palestinian refugees under torture in Syrian government jails.
Recently, the Syrian government provided lists of victims of torture. Families seeking to identify their relatives’ fates are likely to find yearned-for data at the civil status offices.
The Syrian government updated the families of 40 Palestinian refugees sheltered in AlAyedeen refugee camps in Hama and Hums, along with other camps in Damascus, on the death of their relatives under torture. The pieces of news were circulated via the General Commission for Palestine Arab Refugees.
AGPS is deeply concerned about the upsurge in the number of Palestinian victims of torture and enforced disappearance in Syria.
AGPS estimates the real number of victims to be far higher than that disclosed by the Syrian government. Dozens of families have refused to reveal their relatives’ names for fear of retaliation.
AGPS documented the incarceration of 1,680 Palestinian refugees in Syrian dungeons, among them 106 women and children. The detainees’ fate has been shrouded in mystery.
