Families Displaced from Yarmouk Camp Subjected to Housing Crisis

Palestinian refugees who have been displaced from Yarmouk Camp continue to sound distress signals over their inability to find suitable shelters in Yalda, Babila, and Beit Sahem towns, south of Damascus, particularly after UNRWA has cut its cash aids.

Thousands of refugees fled Yarmouk in the aftermath of a military operation launched by the Syrian government forces on December 16, 2012. Stranded refugees fled the camp after ISIS militias seized the area in early April 2015. A recent offensive carried out by the Syrian and Russian forces in an attempt to overthrow ISIS led to a mass-exodus among the families who remained in the camp.

Hundreds of homeless civilians have sought shelter in abandoned buildings in Yalda, Babila, and Beit Sahem, before they were ordered, by the house owners, to shell out rental fees of up to $55 or to immediately walk out.

UNRWA said it was forced to reduce its emergency cash assistance in Syria from USD 32 to USD 23 a month per every single person due to the funding crisis.
