UNRWA announced that it received a contribution of US$ 5 million from the State of Kuwait in support of Palestinian refugees and UNRWA operations in Syria.
The contribution will help UNRWA provide crucial services for Palestine refugees who have endured conflict, displacement and suffering for far too long.
The move came following a fundraising appeal launched by UNRWA at the donor’s conference held in New York on Monday, June 25, 2018, so as to make up for a deficit of up to US$ 250 million. Donor countries pledged to shell out US$ 375.
UNRWA is confronted with an increased demand for services resulting from a growth in the number of registered Palestine refugees, the extent of their vulnerability and their deepening poverty.
UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions and financial support has been outpaced by the growth in needs. As a result, the UNRWA budget, which supports the delivery of core essential services, has been operating with a large shortfall.
