Migrant Boat from Lebanon Docked in Cyprus

A vessel carrying 65 people from Syria, including 24 babies and children and two pregnant women, arrived in Cyprus on Thursday afternoon, police said.

The boat had been detected by coastal radar at around 11.20 am off Cape Greco in the Famagusta district. Police said it had sailed from Lebanon.

Marine police patrol boats were dispatched to the area and after locating the vessel they escorted it to a fishing harbor in Paralimni where they arrived at around 4 pm.

Police added that the boat carried 65 passengers – 23 men, 18 women, two of whom pregnant, and 24 children aged between one month and 15 years.

The migrants were reportedly received by civil defense personnel who will take care of their needs. The pregnant women will be taken to Famagusta general hospital as a precaution.

Dozens of migrants, among them Palestinian refugees, landed in Cyprus, fleeing war-torn Syria and other tension-stricken zones.
